Greening our Greens- Fairmont Sets a Progressive Course

TORONTO, March 11, 2008 - As a worthy custodian to some of the world's most awe-inspiring golf courses, Fairmont is committed to preserving the natural grandeur of its golf locales and has taken a proactive approach with the “Greening Our Greens" initiative, part of the company’s award-winning Green Partnership Program.

Many of the great golf architects are inspired by the nature that surrounds a course. At Fairmont, design and management are extensions of each other, providing our golfers with one-of-a-kind experiences in distinctive destinations. During the construction of Fairmont Mayakoba on Mexico’s Riviera Maya and its Greg Norman-designed El Camaleón golf course, protection of the delicate eco-system of the area was a key concern. The environmentally inspired design is evident throughout the 18-hole, par-72 course, with water hazards on all but three holes and two holes directly on the beachfront. The links weave through three distinct landscapes - forest, mangroves and oceanfront stretches. When the signature course at The Fairmont Algonquin in New Brunswick was being redeveloped, an active raptor nest was discovered in a treed area during site analysis and the design and construction were altered to avoid disturbing it.

This sensitive approach to the stewardship of recreational lands is guided by integrated environmental management programs through Audubon International. The Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary System was founded on the belief that conservation and habitat enhancement are priorities at golf courses, schools, and places used for leisure time. Golf courses which achieve certification, every two years, must comply with guidelines and recommendations in six different categories:环境计划、野生动物和栖息地管理、综合害虫管理、水质管理、水源保护、联系和教育。

To date, seven Fairmont courses have achieved full certification in the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary System:The Fairmont Chateau Whistler Golf Course, The Fairmont Banff Springs Golf Course, The Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge Golf Course, Fairmont Le Chateau Montebello Golf Course, The Fairmont Southampton Golf Course, The Fairmont Algonquin and The Fairmont Mayakoba. In addition, Fairmont Le Manoir Richelieu is currently enrolled and working towards full certification.

Such caretaking translates to rich experiences for golfers and guests alike. For example,
at The Fairmont Banff Springs, guests can experience wildlife up-close, as elk roam the championship course. At The Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge, due to the careful management of lakes and ponds onsite and habitat protection, guests can enjoy the nature trail around Lac Beauvert, which displays information on the local ecosystem, or sit on their deck enjoying the sounds of loons or baby Canada geese.
